The glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) is an efficient vector of Xylella fastidiosa (Xf), the pathogen that causes disease in a wide variety of host plants. The feeding behavior of GWSS differs from most leafhoppers because this insect feeds primarily from xylem fluid. Dolezol et al. suggested that body posture in relation to the plant host may play an important role in successful feeding attempts. In this study, we determined the stimuli that initiate GWSS body posture through a process of elimination and determine its relevance to feeding ability.
