Formicidae is a diverse family of social insects composed of about 15,000 described species and 300 genera. Some species such as the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) and the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) can be pestiferous and have received quite a bit of attention. Other ant species are largely ignored and often undocumented. The ant survey of Alabama is an ongoing project that involves the collection and identification of ant species present in the state. Collection techniques include hand collecting, bait stations, soil sifting, Berlese funnels, pit fall traps, and light traps. Literature records have also been examined, and ultimately an annotated list and key will be produced. Current records include 35 genera and 133 species of ants occurring in Alabama.
