A case study of colour patterns of Eristalis sp. (Diptera: Syrphidae) in Legon and Achimota

Diana Abena Wiafe, abenawiafe@yahoo.com, University Of Ghana, Archaeology Department, P.O. Box Lg3 Legon-Accra, Accra, Ghana

This study shows that besides exhibiting sexual dimorphism, the populations of Eristalis in Legon and Achimota display bright clolours. It is revealed that there is a prominence in the variability of the abdominal colour patterns of Eristalis in the study areas.More veriable colour patterns occure in Eristalis population at Achinmota than Legon. However, the population size of Eristalis in Legon is larger compared to that of Achinmota. It is observed that the abundance of each colour pattern in both population of Eristalis in Legon and Achimota undergoes fluctuations in accordance with the prevailing season.Seasonal changes in the habitat results in the elimination of some adult flies of a particular colour pattern from the population.Adult hoverflies, especially those of lighter colour patterns, could automatically transmit certain pathogenic organisms to human beings.
