Sixteen vineyards from four grape-growing regions across Florida were monitored for the presence and severity of grape root borer (GRB) Vitacea polistiformis Harris (Lepidoptera:Sessidae), during 2002 and 2003. GRB were caught in all vineyards, with heavier infestations in the northern and southern counties. Pheromone-baited winged traps were compared to bucket traps in order to determine which trap was more effective in capturing GRB. Significantly more GRB were caught in bucket traps than winged traps. Mating disruption and attract-and-kill gels were evaluated for control of GRB in four Florida vineyards, one in each region of the state. For mating disruption, pheromone twist-ties baited with the leopard moth, Zeuzera pyrina L. (Lepidoptera:Cossidae) pheromone, whose major component is the same as the GRB, were placed in vines at a rate of 250 per acre. Attract-and-kill gels containing the GRB pheromone and a pyrethrin insecticide were applied to vine trunks at a rate of 45 grams per acre. These treatments were compared against treatments of Lorsban (chlorpyrifos) and an untreated control in a completely randomized block design. Two winged traps with GRB pheromone were placed in each treatment to monitor populations of GRB and identify trap shutdown. Complete trap shutdown occurred in the twist-tie treatments. Both treatments (twist-ties and attract-and-kill) were significantly more effective in reducing GRB numbers than the control or Lorsban.
