Members of the genus Cybocephalus are well-known armored scale feeders, but their effectiveness as biological control agents of pest armored scales has not been well studied. Furthermore, there has been very little taxonomic work done on this group of beetles, especially in the New World. There are 4 known species of
Cybocephalus in the U.S. Cybocephalus nigritulus LeConte can be found throughout the eastern U.S., while Cybocephalus californicus Horn is native to the western portion of the country. With the release and subsequent establishment of Cybocephalus binotatus Grouvelle in south Florida and Cybocephalus nipponicus Endrödy-Younga in New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C., there are at least two established adventive species of Cybocephalus in the U.S. Externally these beetles are very similar, however, certain characteristics of the male genitalia taken in conjunction with other characteristics have proven sufficient for identification. The biology of C. binotatus is currently being studied due to its predatory capabilities on the cycad aulacaspis scale, Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi, in south Florida.
