Comparison of rearing Sasajiscymnus tsugae (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on Carolina hemlock versus eastern hemlock with mention of other predatory insects

Sasajiscymnus tsugae is a biological control agent for the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae. Fecundity and survivorship comparisons were conducted on S. tsugae in the mass rearing facility at Clemson University using HWA infested branches of either Carolina hemlock, Tsugae caroliniana, or eastern hemlock, Tsugae canadensis. S. tsugae produced a significantly higher number of eggs per female on the gauze in the oviposition jars containing Carolina hemlock. Additionally, within the rearing boxes, a number of predaceous insects were collected and identified from the HWA infested hemlock branches.
