Introducing the alfalfa leafcutting bee, Megachile rotundata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) into Australia

Ron M. Bitner, bitner@pollination.com, International Pollination Systems, 16645 Plum Road, Caldwell, ID

The introduction of foreign bees for agricultural pollination raises two major concerns: accidental introduction of pests, diseases and parasites; and potential competition with native pollinators. A rigorous protocol has been developed for the Australian Quarantine Service (AQIS) for the introductions of the Alfalfa Leafcutting Bee ( Megachile rotundata) into Australia. An update on the work that was started in 1995 is presented.
