The insect fauna of Vaughan Pond and their adaptation to survival in the littoral zones

Thirteen insecta families belonging to five orders were found to occur in the littoral zone of the Vaughan Pond. The orders represented are Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Odonata, Diptera and Ephemeroptera. The mouth parts of these orders are variously modified and adapted to feeding on fluid food, chewing, scooping micro-organisms from the benthic zones, and filter feeding. The level of modification varies among families within the same order. Some of the orders possess accessory respiratory structures for absorbing dissolved oxygen from the water. Other groups that lack this modification possess other adaptable structures which enable them to swim to the surface to absorb atmospheric oxygen.
