Some aspects of the biology of a phorid fly associated with the mushroom Termitomyles sp

This mini-project is concerned with the feeding behaviour of the phorid fly, a pest of the giant mushroom Termitonyces spp. The duration of the life cycle of the in insect was inverstigated. Measurements were made of the body length of the larva, pupa and adult. Descriptions and diagrams were made of these development stages. The relationship between the size of the mushroom and infestation intensity was investigated. The larger the mushroom, the larger the infestation. Infestations averaged a total of 268 larvae per mushroom for small mushrooms to 546 larvae per mushroom for large mushrooms. A feeding experiment was carried out to determine the rate of consumption capacity of larval stages. Small larvae consumed an avrage of 0.106 g mushroom per day. Based on the figures from this study, the phorid fly associated with Termitonyces spp. has a life cycle with a duration of approximately 37 days.
