Neem seed extract obtained from the neem tree (Azadirachta indica A.Juss)was evluated at the University of Ghana Farm, Legon for the control of insect Pests of French Bean. The neem seed extract was applied at the rate ofd 50g/L, 75g/L 100g/L, Cymethoate EC25 2ml/L and Control (water) as standard checks. The types of insects which visisted the French bean plants were sampled and the nature of damage caused was determined by visual observation. The major insect pests collected include grasshoppers Zonocerus variegatus, green leafhoppers Empoasca spp, Gryllotalpa africana, Prodenia litura, beanfly Ophiomyia spp, Lagra cuprina, Taeniothrips and other beneficial insects. There were significant differences in the various treatments compared to the control.Cymethoate EC25 and the neem seed extracts were equally effective but the neem treated plants were found to be associated with a fungus disease caused by Choanephora spp.The 50g/L concentration of the neem seed extract was found to be cost effective in applying as an alternative insecticide to control French Bean insect pests in Ghana.
