Pesticides based on common plant essential oils: Natural selection by consumers

Murray B. Isman, murray.isman@ubc.ca, University of British Columbia, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, 2357 Main Mall, Suite 248, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Increasing public and government concern for the potential health and environmental impacts of pesticides has seen many traditionally market-leading pesticides fall from favor. At the same time, small entrepreneurial companies have taken advantage of this by introducing several home and garden pesticides, particularly those considered reduced risk or even exempt from federal registration. Several companies have recently introduced consumer pesticides based on plant essential oils as active ingredients, although not all products have been subjected to rigorous pre-market research and development. In this presentation I will discuss some aspects of the development of natural pesticides for the consumer (retail) market, and compare the criteria for commercialization of retail versus agricultural or industrial pesticide products.
