The number of requests to export new agricultural commodities to the U.S. from other countries is mounting. APHIS has increased staff to handle new requests and prepare pests risk assessments. Developing mitigation measures including quarantine treatments after quarantine pests
are identified is the bottleneck in the process of opening new trade in fresh commodities. Development of generic and high-dose treatments against a wide range of pests is an alternative to the traditional one pest/one
treatment approach. Irradiation is the ideal technology for development of generic and high-dose treatments. The upcoming rule on a generic irradiation treatment for fruit flies and use of the high-dose irradiation treatment for
sweetpotato pests from Hawaii will be discussed.
