Studies on the aquatic insect fauna of southeast Alaska: Beginning with Russian Alaska to the present day

Kimberly T. Huntzinger, kth3@email.byu.edu and Richard Baumann, richard_baumann@byu.edu. Brigham Young University, Department of Integrative Biology, Provo, UT

An overview of the aquatic insect fauna of southeast Alaska, minus the Diptera or flies is given after the geographic area involved is defined. Literature containing records of aquatic insect species is reviewed beginning with studies in the early 1800's by F. Sahlberg and C. G. Mannerheim, while this area was part of Russian America. Data from studies conducted over the last 40 years is emphasized in greater detail in an attempt to highlight more recent research activities. Detailed lists are provided for the following aquatic insect taxa: Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), Trichoptera (caddisflies) and aquatic species in the orders Hemiptera (bugs) and Coleoptera (beetles). Special mention is made of rare species and those that represent new records or major range extensions. Finally, a request is made to colleagues and outdoors enthusiasts to continue to collect aquatic insects in southeast Alaska.

Species 1: Ephemeroptera (Mayflies)
Species 2: Diptera
Species 3: Plecoptera (stoneflies)
