The most diverse subfamily of weevils at La Selva is the Conoderinae, with more than 600 species in four tribes and 27 genera known to date. About 86% of the species and a number of genera are undescribed, especially small species and members of mimicry complexes. Most (60%) presently belong to one of three large genera, only one of which is likely to be monophyletic. ALAS sampling, primarily Malaise trapping and canopy fogging, significantly increased the fauna known at the beginning of the study, and genera varied in the most effective sampling method. The generalized sampling missed even common specialists known from focused rearing studies.
