First results of phylogenetic study of the family Sejidae (Acari: Mesostigmata) based on morphological and molecular data

As a result of reassessing the relationships among the mites assigned to the family Sejidae, a new classification is proposed. In the most recent family revision, Hirschmann (1991) described 26 new species of Sejus but nine of these are now assigned to Epicroseius. Using a few morphological characters, Hirschmann placed three genera (Epicroseius, Willmania and Zuluacarus) in the genus Sejus. The status of the species in the family is the source of much uncertainty and information from molecular analyses of 18S, 28S, CO1 and Ef 1 aused along with morphological characters to develop a new view of relations within the Sejidae.
