Public health entomology from Mogadishu to the Minuteman III ICBM

Armando Rosales, US Air Force, 90 ADOS/SGGM, 6900 Alden Drive, F E Warren AFB, WY

Experiences of Medical Entomologists in the US Air Force are variable depending on the individual and circumstance. The mission of any military entomologist is to keep personnel healthy and supplies sound.

Medical Entomology efforts in Somalia during 1992-1993 were primarily focused on mosquito-borne disease prevention, filth flies and feral animals. In other deployments, Air Force Entomology worked to monitor/prevent the spread of malaria into South Korea and among displaced Kurds in Guam. Later, among Air Forces bases in the Persian Gulf region, AF Entomologists addressed vermin, such as filth flies and rodents....pest and vector problems exacerbated by the behavior of our very own troops. Regardless of region or conflict, military entomologists must maintain or obtain a broad biological knowledge, remain flexible, and do so in completely unfamiliar regions of the world.
