Lucanid classification: History, problems, and prospects

M. J. Paulsen, University of Nebraska State Museum, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, University of Nebraska State Museum, W436 Nebraska Hall, Lincoln, NE

The stag beetles (Lucanidae) are a well-known family of scarabaeoid beetles, yet classification and phylogeny within the family remains unsettled. Although the group is the focus of extensive collection and commerce and garners the attention of a great many amateur collectors, rigorous systematic information on the classification of stag beetles is lacking. I plan to present an overview of past lucanid classification, discuss currently recognized issues of concern, and address the potential for a stable and widely-accepted classification scheme within the group in the near future.

Keywords: taxonomy, scarab
