Reducing the risk of importing plant pests

Kenneth R. Lakin and Heather M. Hartzog. USDA-APHIS-PPQ-CPHST-PERAL, 1017 Main Campus Drive, Suite 1550, Raleigh, NC

Commodities proposed for importation into the United States from a new location may pose risks for the introduction and establishment of new plant pests. Scientists at APHIS' Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory in Raleigh, NC conduct risk assessments on such proposed commodity importations. These risk assessments involve the identification of associated plant pests, the determination of which quarantine pests would be likely to follow the importation pathway, the likelihood of introduction, and potential consequences of an introduction and establishment. Thus, the scientists can evaluate the overall pest risk potentials for the proposed commodity importation. These risks may be greatly reduced or eliminated by the implementation of approved mitigation procedures.
