Degree day model for sunflower midge, Contarinia schulzi (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae)

Gary J. Brewer, North Dakota State University, Hultz Hall, Fargo, ND

The sunflower midge, Contarinia schulzi Gagné is a major pest of commercial sunflower. Larval feeding causes a gall-like growth distortion of the growing capitulum that limits seed production. Control methods will be aided by being able to accurately predict sunflower midge emergence. A degree day model of sunflower midge emergence is presented.
