Performance of the Sentricon System with ESP in central Texas with noviflumuron for control of Reticulitermes spp. (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae)

Thomas H. Atkinson, Dow AgroSciences, 5005 Red Bluff Road, Austin, TX

Structures in central Texas infested with Reticulitermes spp. were treated using the Sentricon System with ESPTM and Recruit IIITM (noviflumuron) in 2002-2003. Number of colonies in the vicinity of structures were delineated with dye markers and ranged from 1-3, but typically multiple colonies were present. Faster times to elimination for colonies baited with noviflumuron at different times of year are compared with historical data for hexaflumuron. The use of an electronic monitoring system (Sentricon with ESP) drastically reduced time required to service stations. The number of false positives (positive reading without termites present) was low and typically occurred when the monitoring device had lost palatability and needed to be changed. No false negatives (termites present without positive reading) were observed. The combination of faster time to colony elimination with noviflumuron and reduced labor and time required with Sentricon with ESP should translate into improved service at a lower cost in commercial practice.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes flavipes (eastern subterranean termite)
Species 2: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes virginicus
