Preparing a mass rearing facility for Pseudoscymnus tsugae

Hugh Conway, Department of Entomology, Clemson University, Department of Entomology, Long Hall, Clemson, SC

The objective is to establish a rearing facility at Clemson University that will produce populations of the predatory beetle, Pseudoscymnus tsugae for release on national forest lands in the Chattooga River watershed against the hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand, which has the potential to inflict heavy mortality to Hemlocks in the Southern Appalachian region. An existing laboratory and greenhouse space were converted into a rearing facility for Pseudoscymnus tsugae. This paper describes the conversion process and indicates some of the problems encountered.

Species 1: Coleoptera Coccinellidae Pseudoscymnus tsugae
Species 2: Homoptera Adelgidae Adelges tsugae (Hemlock woolly adelgid)
Keywords: predator
