Impact of harvest operations on the parasitoids Bracon cephi (Gahan) and Bracon lissogaster Muesebeck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) of wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton (Hymenoptera: Cephidae)

Scott B. Meers, Wendell L. Morrill, and David K. Weaver. Montana State University, Entomology, 333 Leon Johnson Hall, Bozeman, MT

Parasitism in wheat stem sawfly has been well documented. This study looks at the occurrence of Bracon cephi and Bracon lissogaster across the Canadian Prairies and American Northern Great Plains. The location of the parasitoid overwintering cocoons within wheat fields is investigated in three dimensional space. The impact of harvesting operations on overwinter survival of the parasitoids is also investigated. Suggested management practices for improving the performance of wheat stem sawfly parasitoids will be presented.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Cephidae Cephus cinctus (wheat stem sawfly)
Species 2: Hymenoptera Braconidae Bracon cephi
Species 3: Hymenoptera Braconidae Bracon lissogaster
Keywords: harvest management, parasitoid
