The national exotic woodborer/bark beetle survey: Non-target trap captures in Illinois

Charles Helm1, Ian Pearse1, and Kenneth Kruse2. (1) Illinois Natural History Survey, 172 NRB, 607 E. Peabody, Champaign, IL, (2) USDA-APHIS-PPQ, 2300 E. Devon Ave, Suite 222, Des Plaines, IL

Based on national guidelines established by USDA-APHIS-PPQ, a network of Lindgren funnel traps was monitored during 2002 and 2003 for a complex of exotic woodborers and bark beetles at numerous establishments and environs throughout Illinois. These locations included establishments which handle high-risk cargo and solid wood packing materials from Asia, Europe, and South America; pallet and crate recycling sites; Mississippi and Illinois River ports; and Christmas tree farms. Tomicus piniperda was the only non-native species detected; however, we will report on various other native species of woodborers and bark beetles captured during this survey.

Species 1: Coleoptera Scolytidae Tomicus piniperda (pine shoot beetle)
Species 2: Coleoptera Scolytidae Ips grandicollis
Species 3: Coleoptera Cerambycidae Neoclytus acuminatus (redheaded ash borer)
Keywords: survey, Lindgren funnel
