Brian D. Farrell, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, Museum of Comparative Zoology, 26 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA

A consortium of government, NGO and university institutions in the Dominican Republic, together with northern partners, has formed to establish a bioinformatics network. The purpose is to create a database of specimens in new and historical insect and plant collections from Hispaniola, including high resolution images for every species for the WWW. The database will form the basis for a virtual encyclopedia of life for the region that will include collections in other Caribbean countries.

Keywords: Hispaniola, biodiversity
