Function of a putative sterol carrier protein in mosquitoes

Yellow fever Mosquito sterol carrier protein (SCP-2) is known to bind to cholesterol. Although it metabolic function is unclear, it would appear to play a role in the transport and uptake of cholesterol which is essential for steroid biosynthesis in insects since they lack the enzymes necessary to make cholesterol de novo. We report here the three dimensional structure of the complex of SCP-2 from Aedes aegypti with a C16 fatty acid to 1.35 Å resolution.
