Inducing epizootics in cotton aphids in Arkansas cotton

Larry Galligan, Donald Steinkraus, and Jon Zawislak. University of Arkansas, Entomology, Cralley Warren Research Laboratory, 2601 N. Young Ave, Fayetteville, AR

Neozygite fresenii (Entomophthorales: Neozygitaceae), an entomopathogenic fungus, was used to initiate epizootics in cotton aphids, Aphis gossypii (Homoptera: Aphididae). Field trials were carried out using cadavers infected with N. fresenii, as well as "mini-epizootic" plants infested with infected aphids. The goal of this research is to minimize the use of pesticides in agroecosystems.

Species 1: Homoptera Aphididae Aphis gossypii (cotton aphid)
Species 2: Entomophthorales Neozygitaceae Neozygites fresenii
