Western corn rootworm beetle populations in fields planted to transgenic corn

Amanda R. Schroeder and Gerald E. Wilde. Kansas State University, Entomology, 123 West Waters Hall, Manhattan, KS

The Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, has been labeled the billion dollar pest. Monitoring of this pest will allow us to determine the population dynamics of YieldGard® Rootworm. Western corn rootworm beetle populations were monitored in fields planted to transgenic corn with the use of Pherocon® AM sticky traps. Traps were placed in both transgenic and non-transgenic refuge areas. Beetle populations, the sex ratio, and the size of the beetles in the transgenic and non-transgenic areas are compared. These data will be useful in evaluating YieldGard® Rootworm hybrid efficiency and refuge area recommended by the EPA. This data will be helpful in developing good insecticide resistance management strategies.

Species 1: Coleoptera Chrysomelidae Diabrotica virgifera (western corn rootworm)
Keywords: transgenic corn, YieldGard Rootworm
