Land use, imported fire ants, and species diversity

Ken Helms and S. Bradleigh Vinson. Texas A&M University, Department of Entomology, College Station, TX

Biotic diversity was compared between pastures and old fields of eastern Texas. Species richness and diversity was greater in old fields than pastures; however, it appears that pastures are at least as productive as old fields. In addition, pastures exhibit much greater densities of imported fire ants. The possible causes and consequences of these results will be discussed.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Formicidae Solenopsis invicta (red imported fire ant)
Keywords: invasive species, conservation
