From lugs to bins: the scale-up of CATTS technology for quarantine treatments

Research-scale Controlled Atmosphere Temperature Treatment Systems (CATTS), which combine high temperatures and controlled atmosphere treatments have been used to develop quarantine treatments for deciduous tree fruits such as apples, winter and summer pears, sweet cherries, peaches, and nectarines. This technology has now been scaled up to a bin-sized unit which can handle 1,000 lbs of fruit. This larger CATTS chamber will allow for testing of air flow and heating which will help in developing future 5, 10, and 20 ton commercial units. The construction of the unit and air flow and thermal mapping of various configurations of apples, sweet cherries, and peaches will be discussed.
