A new fossil Chrysomela from the Oligocene of Montana (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Theodore K. Hanson, Michael A. Ivie, and Katharine A. Marske. Montana State University, Department of Entomology, Bozeman, MT

The recently discovered Canyon Ferry Lagerstätte has yielded a series of a spectacularly preserved new from the Oligocene fossil species of the genus Chrysomela. This is the first fossil member of this genus to be described. Details of color pattern, genitalia, and external morphology are displayed in the more than 20 specimens so far recovered. This species is part of a Holarctic group, but appears to be most closely related to Eurasia species among the extant fauna. The implications of this find to the biogeography of the genus, and the reconstruction of the Canyon Ferry environment of 28 MYBP are discussed.

Species 1: Coleoptera Chrysomelidae Chrysomela
Keywords: Canyon Ferry Deposit
