Quantification of Lepidopteran activity in field-grown cotton varieties expressing 2 Bt genes

John Greenplate, Stephen Penn, Barbara Reich, and Jason Osborn. Monsanto Company, 700 Chesterfield Parkway N, St. Louis, MO

A quantitative laboratory bioassay was used to evaluate the lepidopteran activity of specific tissues of field-grown cotton varieties expressing both Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab Bt toxins. Total lepidopteran activity was measured via quantitative bioassay and the presence of both toxins was verified via protein-specific ELISA. These studies were performed to ensure stable expression of both toxins at adequate levels in multiple genetic backgrounds in anticipation of commercialization of two-toxin cotton varieties.

Species 1: Lepidoptera Noctuidae Heliothis virescens (tobacco budworm)
Keywords: Cry1Ac, Cry2Ab
