Dealer Day 2003: Training for agricultural chemical dealers to enhance regulatory compliance, pesticide safety, and integrated pest management in North Carolina

Wayne G. Buhler, North Carolina State University, Department of Horticultural Science, Box 7609, Raleigh, NC and Stephen J. Toth Jr, North Carolina State University, Department of Entomology, Box 7613, Raleigh, NC.

There are nearly 800 dealers licenced to sell restricted-use pesticides in North Carolina. Although their primary activity is commerce, dealers often serve as a source of information on pest management and pesticide use to their clientele. To make certain that they provide reliable information to their clientele, dealers need to receive or have access to unbiased, science-based information on integrated pest management. A mail-in survey of licensed pesticide dealers in North Carolina was conducted in the Spring of 2001 to determine their informational needs. Based on survey results, a one-day Dealer Day training program was developed by personnel of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and conducted at five locations across the state in January and February 2003.
