Subterranean termite tunnel geometry: a comparison of two and three-dimensional arenas

Paul Bardunias and Nan-Yao Su. University of Florida, 3205 College Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL

The two-dimensional arena has been used to investigate many aspects of subterranean termite foraging. Since this arena constrains foraging to a single plane, termites may not behave in a natural manner. We have developed a novel three-dimensional foraging arena, and compared the geometry of excavated tunnels between two and three-dimensional arenas.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Coptotermes formosanus (Formosan subterranean termite)
Species 2: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes flavipes (Eastern subterranean termite)
Keywords: Tunneling
