Performance comparisons for noviflumuron and hexaflumuron, two chitin synthesis inhibitors used in baiting for control of subterranean termites, were made at various sites in southern California. The sites were monitored monthly using mark-recapture methods to identify individual in-ground colonies. Baiting was initiated when at least two stations were found connected and most sites were subsequently monitored for at least one year following elimination of the baited colonies. Noviflumuron showed a clear advantage over hexaflumuron in mean time to elimination. In addition, lower concentrations of active ingredient, 0.25% vs. 0.5%, appear to provide at least equivalent results.
