Species composition and management of sweet potato weevils (Cylas spp.) in southern Ghana

Solomon Yaw Darko and David Daaman Wilson. University of Ghana, Zoology Department, Post Office Box LG67, Legon, Accra, Ghana

Species composition of sweet potato weevils (Cylas spp) on two sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) varieties was determined in the southern part of Ghana. Two species, Cylas puncticollis and C. brunnues were found to be present. Effects of treatment (fertilizer, furadan, fertilizer + furadan and control) on sweet potato weevil populations were evaluated on the two varieties. Analysis showed that there was no significant difference (P>0.05, AOV) between the treatments on the weevils’ population. Treatments effect on weevils’ infestation (damage) of tubers on the two varieties was assessed during harvesting. The effects of treatments did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from each other and from the control. However, furadan moderately reduced tuber infestation (damage) during the two planting seasons.
