Wireworm populations in eastern Virginia and insecticide efficacy in potatoes

Thomas P. Kuhar, Roberto J. Cordero, John Speese III, and Roger R. Youngman. Virginia Tech, Entomology, Eastern Shore AREC, 33446 Research Drive, Painter, VA

Wireworm populations were sampled in agricultural fields in Virginia in Spring 2002 and 2003 using corn seed baiting techniques. Approximately 25% of fields exceeded the economic threshold for wireworms (>1 ww per bait). Also in 2002 and 2003, several insecticides were evaluated for wireworm control in potatoes including: imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, bifenthrin, fipronil, oxamyl, and phorate.

Species 1: Coleoptera Elateridae Melanotus communis (wireworm)
Species 2: Coleoptera Elateridae Conoderus (wireworm)
Keywords: species complex, potato
