Mary Jane West Eberhard, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute & Universidad de Costa Rica, Escuela de Biologia, San Jose, Costa Rica

Howard E. Evans was among the most distinguished and inspiring entomologists of his generation. Reminiscences and an unpublished autobiographical essay provide an outline of his life. In addition I will show how he capitalized on observations of insect natural history to provide insights on the evolution of behavior and the importance of conservation of living things, as well as an entree into studies of the history of science.

Keywords: Biographical sketch
