Surveillance for mosquito-borne arboviruses in Alabama

Michelle Perdue and Gary R. Mullen. Auburn University, Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, 301 Funchess Hall, Auburn, AL

As part of an ongoing surveillance program for West Nile Virus activity in Alabama in 2002, mosquitoes were collected and tested for the following three mosquito-borne encephalitis viruses: Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), St. Louis Encephalititis (SLE) and West Nile (WN). Particular attention was given to Culex species in an effort to determine the natural vectors involved in transmission of WN virus, using gravid traps as the primary collection method. Mosquitoes were pooled by species and assayed for EEE, SLE, and WN viruses using the commercially available VecTest® kits.

Species 1: Diptera Culicidae
Keywords: arbovirus, Culicidae
