Carabid diversity in Northern Great Plains cropping systems

Sue Blodgett and P.M. Denke. Montana State University, Department of Entomology, 333 Leon Johnson Hall, Bozeman, MT

Carabid beetles are important generalist predators of northern dryland production systems, however, their impact in these cropping systems is not well known. Species composition and seasonal occurrence of carabid beetles were examined in legume, oilseed and cereal crops, multiple year crop rotational systems and low and high input cropping systems. Pitfall traps were used to monitor carabid beetles activity in four field sites. Between 35 and 45 carabid species were represented at the different field locations. There were significant differences between years and cropping systems among carabid species.

Species 1: Coleoptera Carabidae (ground beetle)
Keywords: natural enemies, predators
