Mosquito surviellance in Lancaster County continued in 2002 for West Nile virus. The surveillance program was initiated in April and will terminate in November and involved larval and adult mosquito sampling from in or around permanent marshes, temporary ponds, catch basins, tree holes, tire piles and sewage treatment plants. In 2001, 24 species of mosquitoes were collected from Lancaster County, to date in 2002, approximately 15 species of larval/adult mosquitoes have been identified in the county. Culex restuans has been the most abundant species collected from wetland and tire pile habitats. As of July, 17 corvid avian species have been collected for virus assays, no positive bird or mosquito pools have tested positive for WNV.
