M-714: A matrix to enhance the infestation frequency and speed of subterranean termite monitoring/bait stations

To enhance the process of subterranean termite monitoring and baiting, a new matrix, M-714, was used to increase both the frequency and the speed of station infestation. In the laboratory, Reticulitermes flavipes and Coptotermes formosanus were provided a choice between paired comparisons of M-714 and various woods used for commercial termite monitors to measure the number of termites infesting M-714 versus standard monitor woods. In all comparisons, significantly more termites infested M-714 compared to any monitor wood tested. Additional laboratory studies examined the effects of M-714 on disturbance and transfer of termites to FirstLine® GT Plus Bait Stations. Two field trials (2001 and 2002) were initiated using DefenderTM units installed in grids at the New Jersey Experiment Station in a plot containing resident populations of R. flavipes and R. hagenii . Both experiments resulted in enhanced infestation rates (4x and 8x, respectively) within the first month of the trial once M-714 was added to the Defender units. Additional field trials were initiated to examine infestation rates under commercial termite baiting situations. Based on the research data accumulated so far, M-714 will enhance the frequency and speed of termites infesting monitoring and baiting stations.
