Sampling and control of sweet potato insect pests

Abner Hammond, Richard Story, Jeff Murray, and Abu Diagne. Louisiana State University, Entomology, LAES, LSU Agricultural Center, Baton Rouge, LA

A state-wide pheromone based trapping program for Phyllophaga spp. and sweetpotato weevil has been implemented to improve our IPM program in sweetpotato. Sweet net and pheromone trap captures of adult insects have been correlated to pest damage of roots. Growers and consultants are increasingly interested in development of economic thresholds. Also, reduced-risk insecticides have been evaluated to address EPA concerns with organophosphate insecticides used in sweetpotato. This poster presents our most recent research with sampling systems and new insecticides.

Keywords: insect pests, sweet potato
