The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum is a major pest of stored grain-based products, especially in food processing environments such as flour mills. Traps using aggregation pheromone and food odor as attractants are commercially available, but little is known about trap active space and capture efficiency. The influence of endogenous (e.g., sex, starvation level, reproductive status) and exogenous (e.g., attractant type, location, air movement) factors on beetle response to traps was investigated. This type of information is useful for determining optimal trap placement and for interpreting the results of a monitoring program.
