Life history of the western balsam bark beetle in Colorado

Jose F. Negron and John Popp. USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, 240 west prospect, fort collins, CO

The western balsam bark beetle is a primary disturbance agent causing mortality to subalpine fir across the Rocky Mountains. Little is known about the biology of this species. Since 2000 we have been sampling downed trees attacked by the insect in a high elevation site in central Colorado. The insect has a two year life cycle. Results will be presented.

Species 1: coleoptera scolytidae Dryocoetes confusus (western balsam bark beetle)
Keywords: bark beetles
