Total insect bio-inventory project of the Mobile Tensaw Delta

John W. McCreadie, University of South Alabama, Biology Department, LSCB Room 124, Mobile, AL and Peter H. Adler, Clemson University, Department of Entomology, 114 Long Hall, Clemson, SC.

In 1995 Mobile/Tensaw Delta became a part of the country's National Estuary Programs. Much of this 250,000 acre area of cypress-gum swamps and bottomland hardwood forests is relatively undisturbed. Although it is the nation's second largest river delta, little is known about the biota of this habitat. In response to the paucity of information, the Total Insect Bio-inventory Project (TIBP) of the Mobile/Tensaw Delta was established in the spring of 2000. Envisioned as a 20 year project the primary goals of the TIBP are to i) produce a complete bioinventory of the insect fauna in the Mobile/Tensaw Delta; ii) spatially reference each collection; iii) determine the degree of endemism; iv) document genetic diversity and; v) provide a reference collection of Delta insects. Results of the first two years of sampling are presented.
