Phylogeny and Biogeography in the Oedionychine flea beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae)

The Oedionychina is a tribe of flea beetles distributed in the continents of Ancient Gondwanda minus Australia ( Africa, India, Madagascar, South America). There are two published hypotheses to describe this distribution. One expounded by Bechyne (1980) claims that the Oedionycha arose in the Tertiary and dispersal is the causal factor. The second, proposed by Scherer (1988) maintains an earlier evolution and vicariance is responsible for this distribution. We test these hypotheses using molecular markers and discuss the morphological definition of Oedionychina inferred from our phylogeny.
