Will mass trapping of codling moth ever work?

Alan Knight, USDA-ARS-YARL, 5230 Konnowac Pass Road, Wapato, WA and Doug Light, USDA-ARS-WRRC, 800 Buchanan Street, Albany, CA.

Efforts to manage codling moth by mass trapping adults with a combination lure baited with sex pheromone and the pear ester kairomone will be reported. Studies from apple suggest that the attractiveness of the pear ester for females in this crop may not be sufficient to reduce fruit injury substantially. Optimization studies involving trap density and trap and lure type are presented. The potential for this technique in different cultivars of apple will also be discussed.

Species 1: Lepidoptera Tortricidae Cydia pomonella (codling moth)
Keywords: apple, sex pheromone
