Where did the first American entomologists come from?

John K. Bouseman and William G. Ruesink. Illinois Natural History Survey, 607 E. Peabody Drive, Champaign, IL

While numerous publications have appeared on the history of American entomology and early American entomologists, this may be the first look at the geographic distribution of place of origin of these entomologists. The study included approximately 50 scientists born prior to 1850 whose primary entomological work was done in the U.S. Approximately a third originate in each of three areas: (1) first or second generation from Europe, (2) New England & adjacent New York state, and (3) Mid-Atlantic. Maps of these three areas are presented to show where each specific entomologist originated.

Keywords: historical entomology, origin
