Mosquito surveillance was initiated in Lowndes Co., Georgia following the detection of a West Nile virus epizootic during the summer of 2001. Collections using CO2
baited traps and gravid traps documented the presence of 26 species in 8 genera from 78 locations in this county. Virus isolates were obtained from Culex salinarius, Culex nigripalpus and Culex quinquefasciatus. Seasonal changes in species composition and abundance of mosquito populations were observed during 2002. The potential relationship of these factors to virus transmission in southern Georgia will be discussed.
Species 1: Diptera Culicidae
