Safety of the acaricide bifenazate (ACRAMITE) to beneficial mites in a Connecticut apple orchard

P. T. McDonald and R.C. Moore. Crompton Corporation, 74 Amity Road, Bethany, CT

The application of bifenazate (ACRAMITE 50WP) gave excellent control of a midsummer population of the European red mite Panonychus mali on red delicious apple trees. Bifenazate also prevented the build-up of a population of the twospotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae. Bifenazate was safe to the population of the predatory mite Zetzellia mali. The use of a non-selective acaricide in the same trial was associated with a reduction in the predatory mite population and "flaring' of the incipient twospotted spider mite population.

Keywords: miticide, selectivity
